Mrs Royal has occupied several ministerial posts. She was Minister for the Environment from April 1992 to March 1993, then Minister Delegate in charge of Family Affairs, Childhood and Disability from March 2000 to May 2002 and Minister Delegate in charge of School Education from June 1997 to March 2000.
She chaired the Poitou-Charentes Region from April 2004 to May 2014 and has remained a Regional Councillor of this Region since May 2014. She also served as a member of the French Parliament for the Deux-Sèvres département from 1988 to 1992, 1993 to 1997, and again from 2002 to 2007.
Mrs Royal was the runner-up to the French Presidency in 2007. Mrs Royal served in other positions such as Vice-President and Spokesperson for the Banque publique d’investissement (French Public Bank of Investment) from February 2013 to April 2014 and Vice-President of the Socialist International since 2008. She was an advisor at the French presidency from 1982 to 1988. Prior to joining a political position, she was an Administrative Court Judge in Paris (1980- 1982).
Mrs Royal graduated from the Institut d’études politiques in Paris in 1978 and the École nationale d’administration in 1980. She also holds a degree in Economics.
